A photo of a baby born in Sultan Kudarat with only one eye, similar to the mythical Cyclops, recently became viral in the online community.
Pahmia blamed the condition of her baby to her constant craving for pineapple. She said she would get mad at her husband, Omran when she could not get a hold of the said fruit.
Their baby was born premature at only seven months at their house in Sultan Kudarat. She heard the infant cry before she passed out from the exhaustion of giving birth.
Three hours later when Pahmia gained consciousness, she immediately came looking for her child. She was heartbroken to learn that her baby girl had died just a few minutes after it was born and was only able to see the infant in a photo from a phone. The mother admitted that she was scared of what the baby looked like. It had only one eye and it did not have a nose.
She shared that she experienced bleeding in the second month of her pregnancy. When they consulted the doctor, they were told that everything was normal. But she had to return to the hospital in her sixth month because she began bleeding again which she said had been going on for more than eight days.
The ultrasound image of her baby was not very clear, but it indicated that there was something wrong with the infant’s appearance. The infant could have died inside her womb, and worse it could have poisoned her from inside. Pahmia refused to believe the doctors when they told her that the baby was not normal so she carried on with the pregnancy.
Up to now, she thinks that the culprit for the baby’s features is her craving for the fruit which was of course contradicted by a doctor.
The baby was said to have Cyclopia or Cyclocephaly. It is a condition where an infant is born with only one center-located eye, usually without a nose or a mouth. It only happens in 1 out of 100,000 babies. The lives of those who suffer from the disorder do not last long after birth as they do not have an organ which allows them to breathe.
Apparently, the couple are related to each other by blood as second cousins. An expert said there might have been a problem the combination of their genes which has caused a mutation.
Parents said, had the baby lived, they would have named her Patricia.
