University of the Philippines Office of the Student Regent on Tuesday released their official statement condemning the plan of UP Administration to confer an honorary law degree to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
"Honors are not deserved by a president whose regime killed thousands of citizens and leaders of progressive groups under Oplan Tokhang and Oplan Kapayapaan. Honors must not be given to a president that declares all-out war against his people to quell their struggle for just and lasting peace, and reimposes death penalty to legitimize the killing of the poor," stated UP Student Regent.
They added, "Duterte has not even exhibited excellence to date. His plan to continue neoliberal policies, which ultimately enhance profit generation for the privileged few, have resulted in unfulfilled promises. Contractualization will becoming more rampant through Department Order 174. Collection of profits from students will be systematized through nationwide implementation of socialized tuition."
"Moreover, it is ironic that a university, which has then and now fought against state fascism, will now recognize a president that allowed the burial of Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani -- much against the will of the Filipino people," they further wrote.
Following the statement of the Office of the UP Student Regent, well-known writer and New York University alumnus Krizette Chu hits back defending President Duterte.
In a Facebook post Chu wrote, "When you protest (you know, you should see the irony in declaring Duterte blocks dissent WHILE YOU ARE FREELY LOUDLY DISSENTING THE AWARD, LOL right?), please also call for the revocation of Aquino's degree."
"If we're talking human rights abuses, it's not fair for the victims of the Aquino admin that you don't acknowledge their suffering. Be fair, don't discriminate. Revoke Aquino's degree! Now na!," the well-known writer added.
Krizette also appealed:
"Yung mga taga UP diyan at yung ibang irresponsible media who say things like, "UP PROTESTS THE CONFERMENT OF THE HONORARY DEGREE TO DUTERTE," wag magmagaling. You are NOT UP. AFAIK, there are thousands of pro Duterte UP students and alumni. Also, if we go by statistics, there are probably MORE UP students, from Diliman, Visayas, LB, who are pro government than not. Don't hijack the UP name like you've hijacked the idea of 'decency'."
