For Kapamilya artist Denise Laurel, some things have to be learned the hard way, and that’s what she discovered when ‘puyat’ adversely affected her body.
During the gruelling competition for “Your Face Sounds Familiar 2“, the singer-actress noticed something about her health.
Speaking to PEP during a wellness event in 2016, Denise said, “I couldn’t understand because I was so healthy, I was working out, I was doing soap and Your Face at the same time, pero I was gaining weight. Yun pala that’s my body, it’s stressed na. My body started acting up.”
She took the next logical step: Have a check-up.
What Denise discovered surprised her. “They found a mass in my breast, my lymph nodes, and in my ovaries. I have cysts all over!”
And the culprit was even more shocking: puyat.
The veteran performer and theater actress always pushed herself to the limits. “Twenty-one years of non-stop working and pushing myself to the limits sometimes, which I love to do. Nobody forced me, I loved to do that.”
“I was younger, fit, because I exercise, what could go wrong, right?” she asked herself.
Eventually, the nasty effects of puyat, as well as ‘exercising while puyat’, took its toll on her body.
With her experience, she emphasized the fact that no one is invincible.
Although not all of the cysts are gone, Denise is in no hurry to have them removed.
“I’m gonna have to take out some of them. In time. There’s no rush. But I’ve already taken out half of what’s inside my breast, pero I dunno, I don’t like operations, e,” she explained. “So I’m gonna do it little by little.”
Since she has become wary of her health, the young actress is not keen on taking medicine.
“And I’m not taking any medication because it messes with your system. And I wanna be good, energetic mom for my son,” she added.
Denise is mother to a handsome five-year-old kid, Alejandro.
What’s her takeaway from this harrowing experience?
“Do not take sleep for granted. I also catch naps whenever I can.”
With an overhaul in her lifestyle, Denise also changed her diet to a “no sugar, less sodium” one.
And with everything that has happened, the beautiful actress remains vivacious with life. “Masaya pa rin ang buhay,” she quipped.
Here are some of the comments from the netizens.
