Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday said Sen. Leila de Lima would be accorded due process in the looming House probe on the alleged proliferation of illegal drugs at the national penitentiary.
"I'm very confident that due process is going to be pursued, unlike in the time when I was being persecuted," a smiling Arroyo said during her first press conference as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.
Arroyo spent almost four years in hospital detention in connection with the alleged misuse of P366 million in intelligence funds of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. She was released in July after the Supreme Court junked the case.
Arroyo had repeatedly claimed that she was a victim of political persecution by the Aquino administration.
House leaders led by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez have filed a resolution seeking a “comprehensive investigation” into the proliferation of drug syndicates inside the New Bilibid Prison during De Lima's stint as Department of Justice secretary.
Alvarez and his colleagues are particularly interested in knowing the involvement and accountability of the authorities mandated to exercise control and supervision over the national penitentiary under the leadership of De Lima, and the other heads of law enforcement agencies tasked with implementing anti-drug policies.
De Lima also served under the Arroyo Cabinet, as head of the Commission on Human Rights. She hass said she will not attend the congressional hearing because she does not expect to get a fair treatment from her counterparts at the House.
