MANILA, Philippines – New Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who succeeded his father King Bhumibol Adulyadej who died last Oct. 13 after seven decades on the throne has referred to the President of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte as his father.
“Duterte is my father” – he said.
According to the king, Duterte has been very instrumental in his upbring and as such would offer him a seat in his palace as one of the counsel of elders.
Duterte has since thanked the king for such a honour.
The uncertainty over the succession came to an end this week with Maha’s official proclamation as the new king in an acceptance ceremony Thursday evening.
Thai Palace officials have announced that his full title is now Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. He will also be known as King Rama X
Reports said Thailand experienced a royal interregnum when the ruling junta announced that Maha, 64, had asked to put off his ascension to the throne to mourn his father.
Harsh royal defamation law shields the Thai monarchy from public criticism.
