Senator Manny Pacquaio and Senator Leila De Lima on Monday debated on the reimposition of the death penalty in the Philippines.
Pacquiao delivered his first privilege speech and showed his support over reviving of the death penalty.
Pacquiao said he has filed Senate Bill No. 185 or "An act to impose the Death Penalty and increased penalties on certain heinous crimes involving dangerous drugs, amending for that purpose other special penal laws, and for other purposes."
"The death penalty was never abolished kaya dapat natin linawin na mula noon hanggang ngayon, hindi pinagbabawal sa Saligang Batas ang parusang kamatayan ... lalung-lalo na sa mata ng ating Panginoon," Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao said that death penalty is moral and lawful.
“The death penalty is lawful, moral and sanctioned governmental action. Having read the Bible on a regular basis, I am convinced that God is not just a God of mercy, but also a God of justice,” said the boxer and Christian preacher.
“I strongly, firmly and passionately against for death penalty,” Delima said."Mahirap na nga po magkamali tayo dahil nga imperfect ang ating justice and legal system. Bakit po natin ipu-push ang death penalty na andiyan ang posibilidad na ang inosente ay puwede mapatawan ng death penalty?" De Lima said.
