The first fatality of the HTI Factory Fire in General Trias City, Cavite was announced by Governor Boying Remulla.
The man was identified as Jerome Sismaet, 37 years old from Maragondon Cavite, a line leader at the House Technologies Industries (HTI) factory.
“At 11:28 pm last night, Saturday, February 4, Jerome Sismaet of HTI died after suffering severe burn injuries from the fire that broke out Wednesday, February 1 at 6pm. Let us all pray for the repose of his soul and for his loved ones. Nakikiramay po ako at ang Lalawigan ng Cavite.” Governor Boying Remulla wrote on his Facebook post.
He was considered as “Hero” by many CaviteƱos because he tried to save all his team mates first before leaving the burning factory, but unfortunately the fire reached him that made him suffered severe burn injuries.
Director General of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Charito Plaza described Sismaet as a hero for staying behind to let his subordinates leave the burning factory first.
His subordinates also thanked him for being a good line leader who sacrificed his life for his subordinates.
He was also described by his co-workers as one of the funniest workers in HTI and their second father.
HTI vowed to shoulder all the medical bills and other expenses of all affective employees of the fire.
After 3 days, the factory fire was finally declared as fire out and it estimated that the cost of damages worth at least P15-B.
