VIRAL : 7TH DEAD OARFISH SPOTTED ON CAGAYAN DE ORO SHORE, IS IT A SIGN OF ANOTHER IMPENDING DISASTER?

Another dead oarfish was found along the shore of Barangay Gusa in Cagayan de Oro on Saturday, February 18.

According to Jude Cyril Roque Viernes's Facebook post, the silvery scale-less fish was about 15 meters long. It was alive when they found it but later died.

Oarfish was recognized by Guinness Book of World Record in 2015 as the longest bony fish. It got its name because its long pectoral fins resembles oars.

This is the seventh spotted dead oarfish since January of this year, five we seen in different areas before Surigao was hit by a 6.7-magnitude earthquake on February 10.

The sixth dead oarfish, measuring 12 meters, was found on shores of Barangay Rojales in Carmen, Agusan Del Norte, on February 15. A series of "aftershocks" hit Surigao following this dead oarfish spotting: a magnitude 4.6 at 5:18 p.m. Friday and a magnitude 2.8 quake followed at 7:34 p.m. the same day.

Considered as "prophet of doom," in Japan, dozens of oarfishes were found in different areas of the country prior to the destructive earthquakes that hit Chile and Haiti in 2010.

Oarfishes are deep-sea creatures and experts believe that they rise in shallow water when they detect underwater fault movement.

Last week, PHIVOLCS warns of a greater threat that may kill thousands.
