President Rodrigo Duterte made a new rape joke again last Friday, July 15. This time, his joke focused on Miss Universe beauties. As expected, he was heavily criticized by his critics, particularly Senator Risa Hontiveros and former Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño. Nevertheless, 2015 Miss Universe winner, Pia Wurtzbach defended the president's action.
"What I don’t like are kids [being raped]. You can mess with, maybe a Miss Universe. Maybe I will even congratulate you for having the balls to rape somebody when you know you are going to die." President Duterte said in his speech at a tourism event in Davao City, Friday night. At the same time, he also defended his war against illegal drugs.
Apparently, this is not President Duterte's first rape joke. Besides his controversial rape joke on an Australian missionary during the election campaign, he told the soldiers in Iligan City last May that he will take the blame if they rape 3 women. In defense, Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said that the president is just speaking with heightened bravado.
For his latest rape joke, Rodrigo Duterte put himself again in the limelight of criticisms. Sen.Hontiveros, who is the chair of the Senate committee on women, wrote on Facebook, "You can't mess even with Miss Universe when it comes to rape. You don't have balls when you rape somebody. You have a cowardly hatred of women #RapeIsNotAJoke #EveryWoman."
On the other hand, Mr. Casiño tweeted, "I hope the 3 ex Ms. Universe who met up to endorse the Pambansang Manok can also unite to condemn the Pambansang Bastos." And although the leftist group leader did not mention any name, Pia Wurtzbach, who have met President Duterte two times, commented on the latter's Ms. Universe rape joke.
"Personally, I was not offended. This is probably because I met him in person, and I felt his heart and concern for women's safety. In fact, many of projects when he was still a mayor aim to protect women. Yes, his jokes might have offended others, but I believe he is a real gentleman inside and out." Pia Wurtzbach said in an ambush interview, Sunday, July 16.
