On September 18, 2017, netizens were shocked when another young man lost his life after allegedly undergoing the hazing rites of the Aegis Juris Fraternity. Based on reports, the dean of the University of Sto. Tomas Law was also a member of the fraternity. The student was a 22-year-old law freshman named Horacio Castillo III.
In a recent report by ABS-CBN News, Dean Nilo Divina was placed on leave after the incident. According to the Manila Police District spokesperson Supt. Erwin Margarejo:
“Admittedly po, he is a member ng Aegis Juris Fraternity, and apparently, nag-issue po siya ng statement na he already made the necessary leave na kanyang ginawa nung siya ay nag-assume as dean.”
He said that they are doing all they can to apprehend all the people involved in Horacio’s death. He continued:
“Ginagawa po namin ‘yung puspusang pagkalap ng ebidensiya, physical evidence, to include ‘yung ating ‘cyber evidence’ na pwedeng makuha.”
Margarejo added that they have also requested for a complete list of the Aegis Juris Fraternity members for their investigation.
In another report from the same source, the fraternity has spoken up about this controversial issue. The Aegis Juris Fraternity released this statement concerning Castillo:
“The Fraternity extends its condolences to the bereaved family of Horacio at these very trying times. Rest assured that the Fraternity will extend its utmost cooperation in the investigation of this unfortunate incident.”
Now, Facebook fan page “Hustisya Para Kay Horacio” revealed that an anonymous netizen has sent them a screenshot of what appeared to be a group chat of its fraternity members prior to the hazing incident. The page emphasized that the netizen asked his identity to be withdrawn from the post.
According to one of the fraternity members’ replies, it was a “major frat activity” where it supposedly started at 9:00 p.m. in Bulacan. One also added,
“Walang tao dun? Baka sumabit tayo dun. Madami ka ata bisita eh.”
