Earlier this week, veteran actress Isabel Granada was rushed to a hospital in Qatar after suffering from a brain aneurysm and multiple cardiac arrests. She was reportedly in the country as a celebrity guest speaker for the Philippine Trade and Tourism Conference.
What exactly is a brain aneurysm? What are its causes, symptoms, and how can we avoid it? According to “Pinoy MD,” a brain or a cerebral aneurysm is the bulging of a weak area in the artery that supplies blood to the brain. The ailment has no symptoms and often goes unnoticed, although there are factors that can augment this.
Dr. Carlos Francis Santiago, an endovascular neurosurgeon, said:
“Yung mga factors na pwedeng magpa-increase ng pagputok nito, with the increase ng blood pressure, o kaya mataas ang mga cholesterol, blood sugar, kasi nakakapagpahina ito ng ugat.”
If the bulging continues, the walls become thinner which could lead to a rupture wherein blood will explode in the skull, causing a stroke. This is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
According to studies, among those who suffer from a brain aneurysm are those who aged 35 to 60. Women are also more prone to acquire the illness compared to men. Smoking can also greatly increase the chances of a brain aneurysm rupturing.
Moreover, WebMD stated that the sickness is inheritable. Those who have a family history of the illness are more likely to have an aneurysm than those who don’t have.
There are signs to take note when a person suffers a brain aneurysm. If you happen to notice someone suffering from a severe headache, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, and fainting, call a physician right away.
