CHR Plans to Investigate Killing of Mayor Datu Saudi Ampatuan

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is planning to investigate the killing of Datu Saudi Ampatuan Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom. The mayor, whose name was included in the list of President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of narco-politicians, was killed at around 4:30 am, this Friday, October 28, in Makilala, North Cotabato, along with his nine escorts.

According to Makilala chief of police Elias Colonia, a checkpoint was conducted at Barangay Bulatukan after the local authorities received information that Mayor Dimaukom and his companions plan to deliver shabu to Maguindanao and Cotabato area. He added that when the mayor’s men immediately fired shots at the police upon arriving at the checkpoint.

Colonia noted that the two-vehicle convoy of Mayor Dimaukom was heavily armed, but was outnumbered after at least 30 police operatives from the Regional Public Safety Battalion arrived at the area and served as back-up. Among the items found after the exchange of shooting includes at least 6 firearms and 13 big sachets of suspected shabu.

Last August, Mayor Dimaukom surrendered to the police shortly after President Duterte publicly announced his name as allegedly involved in illegal drugs. The mayor’s men who were killed have been identified, with police saying that all of them were residents of Datu Saudi Ampatuan. Two of them were hired by the mayor from a private security group.

Nevertheless, PRO-12 Regional Director Cedric Train said a thorough investigation will be conducted to check if the police officers have violated the operating procedures during the said operation. Meanwhile, a personnel from the CHR said that they might conduct their own investigation, to make sure that no human rights were violated during the incident.

“Yes, we plan to investigate this case, considering that not a single police officer was wounded during the encounter. We also want to show the public that our mission is not only for the poor, but to anyone whose human rights might have been violated by the authorities.” The CHR personnel said, adding that CHR chairman Chito Gascon might formally announce it within the next few days.
