A taxi driver in Davao City returned a bag with 2 million yen or around 900,000 pesos inside last Thursday, September 28.
When his passenger left, Reymond Gonzaga found out that she left her bag at the backseat of his taxi. In an interview with ABS-CBN, Gonzaga narrated that he was about to take breakfast when saw the person’s belongings at the backseat.
“Nabantayan nako ang bag dihang mamahaw ko busa midiretso nalang ko sa ABS-CBN aron magpatabang nga mauli ang bag (I was about to take my breakfast when I saw the bag at the back seat. I went here to ask help from ABS-CBN on what to do with the bag),” he said.
Aside from the huge cash it consisted, the bag also contained jewelry, a mobile phone, and other highly important documents such as a passport and a bank book.
The ABS-CBN News team discovered that the owner of the bag is Ruth Muntag Koitabashi, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Japan. Upon learning that her possessions were found, she rushed to the ABS-CBN Davao headquarters to claim them.
Ruth, in an interview, said she forgot her bag as she was in a hurry to meet a friend.
“Nakalimot ko sa ako bag nagdali dali lagi, dako kong pasalamat sa iyaha (I’m very thankful to Reymond because he returned my bag),” she said.
Netizens praised the cab driver for his genuine act.
Davao City ranked as the fourth safest city in the world in 2015. Survey site Numbeo.com detailed that the city had a safety index of 82.06 or a crime index of 17.94.
Seoul ranked as the third, with only a few points edge against Davao City. Singapore then was declared as the second, whilst Osaka was named the no. 1 safest city in the world.
This news was featured on different well-known broadsheets in the country. A netizen, however, criticized the chart and stressed that the ranking was created by a user-contributed site with merely 400+ users mostly from the United States.
The netizen also advised the media to have credible sources next time.
